A clip for interlocking with a groove of a dovetailed sheet and retaining a tube and a method for installing tubes
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a clip for retaining a heating or cooling tube during installation of heating or cooling. The clip is specifically adapted for interlocking with a groove of a dovetailed sheet, which is commonly used when installing heating or cooling.
The present invention further relates to a method of installing heating or cooling tubes using the clip.
Background of the Invention
Radiant floor heating is a popular heating method. However, the installation of the radiant floor heating is both cumbersome and expensive as it involves rolling out long tubes, which have to be distributed evenly over the entire floor.
In order to secure an even distribution, the tubes have to be retained by some retaining means. The process of retaining the tubes is in general slow and therefore expensive.
This is especially true for retaining tubes on dovetailed sheets. The dovetailed sheet has conical grooves, which have different width at each end of the sheet such that two dovetailed sheets can overlap at an end.
At present the tube is retained by screwing a screw through a tube retainer and a dovetailed sheet, which is slow and cause damage to the dovetailed sheets.
So there is a need for a faster and less invasive way of retaining tubes on a dovetailed sheet system.
DK 2017 71038 A1
Object of the Invention
It is an object of the invention to overcome the limitations of the prior art by a clip capable of being interlocked in a dovetailed sheet in a fast manner, while being able to retain a tube.
Description of the Invention
One object of the invention is achieved by a clip for interlocking with a groove of a dovetailed sheet and for retaining a tube such as a PEX tube. The clip may comprise a main body having a top, a first face and an opposite second face, a tube retainer attached to the top, a first flange extending from the first face and a second flange extending from the second face, thereby making the main body oblong.
The effect of the main body being oblong is that the clip can be positioned in a groove of a dovetailed sheet, such that the flanges are substantially parallel to the groove. The clip may afterwards be turned such that the flanges are substantially perpendicular to the groove. This will interlock the clip with the groove of the dovetailed sheet. The friction between the clip and the groove is sufficiently strong such that the clip will not move along the groove when being exposed to a force. Thus, the clip is ready to retain a tube by securing the tube at the tube retainer.
The flanges may have an extent, which is sufficient for the clip to both interlock with widest part of the groove and the narrowest part of the groove.
This ensures that the clip can interlock with any dovetailed sheet also including the dovetailed sheets sold under the trademark name LEWIS.
The tube retainer may comprise two walls forming a retaining space for retaining the tube, while the user rolls out the tube. It is important to note that the clip is only supposed to retain the tube until the floor has been moulded.
The walls may be curved.
The tube retainer may further comprise inwardly pointing hooks positioned distal to the top. The inwardly pointing hooks allow the tube to be slid into the retaining space,
DK 2017 71038 A1 while providing resistance for pulling the tube out of the retaining space. This will also enable the clip to be used in a wall.
In an embodiment the tube retainer comprises a small slit at the top. A plastic strip may then be slid through the slit and closed around a tube.
In an aspect a plurality of flanges may extend from at least one face.
Each flange will increase the friction between the clip and the dovetailed sheet.
In an embodiment each face has two flanges. Tests have shown that the addition of an extra flange to a face considerably improves the interlocking strength.
In an aspect the flange closest to the top of the plurality of flanges may have the shortest extent. The flange furthest from the top of the plurality of flanges may have the greatest extent.
The flange nearest the top does not need the same extent to cause the same level as friction compared to the flanges furthest from the top, as a groove is narrower near an upper part of a dovetailed sheet.
The width of a groove in a dovetailed sheet is different at each end of the dovetailed sheet. Hence, typically the flange with the shortest extent will not be able to interact with slanted walls of the groove, where the groove is widest. However, the flange with the greatest extent will still interact with the groove.
In an embodiment each face has two flanges. The flange furthest from the top may have an extent, which is sufficient for the clip to both interlock with widest part of the groove and the narrowest part of the groove.
The flange closest to the top may have an extent, which is adapted for the narrowest part of the groove, and the flange may not be able to reach the slanted walls of the groove at the widest part of the groove. The flange closest to the top stabilises the clip, since the flange with the greatest extent may warp due to friction forces causing the
DK 2017 71038 A1 clip to be less impact resistant in certain directions. This effect is mediated by the other flange.
In an aspect one or more of the flanges may have a tapered distal end for interlocking with a slanted wall of a dovetailed sheet.
The effect of having a tapered distal end is that the friction between the dovetailed sheet and the flange increases due to an increased surface area.
In an aspect one or more of the flanges may be arranged or may be made to flex relative to the body.
This will enable the clip to work within a larger tolerance of groove widths, as one or more of the flanges are enabled to bend, when being forced towards a slanted wall of a dovetailed sheet.
Furthermore, this makes the flange less brittle.
The flange may be made flexible relative to the body by making the flange thin. The skilled person would know how thin the flange should be.
The flange may be made flexible relative to the body using a flexible material like nylon.
In an aspect one or more of the flanges may be curved for increasing the friction with a slanted wall of a dovetailed sheet.
The curvature of the one or more flanges will increase the friction between the dovetailed sheet and the clip.
In an aspect the tube retainer may be rotatably attached to the top.
This enables the clip to hold a tube at any bend or curvature, as the tube retainer will adjust to the direction of the tube.
DK 2017 71038 A1
In an embodiment the body has receiving means for receiving a tube retainer, such that the user may attach a tube retainer having any suitable shape.
The receiving means may be a click system, such that the retainer is attached to the top of the body.
The click system may have predetermined positions which the tube retainer may be pushed into, such that the retainer may form any angle relative to the flanges. This could be 0 degrees, 45 degrees or 90 degrees.
In an aspect the clip may be made of nylon. Nylon has the necessary strength and shock resistance needed when installing heating or cooling tubes.
In an aspect the clip may be made of polyvinyl chloride polymer (PVC). PVC has the necessary strength and shock resistance needed when installing heating or cooling tubes.
In an embodiment the clip may be made of other forms of plastic, composite materials, metals and wood.
A method for installing heating or cooling tubes comprising one or more acts of;
- positioning a clip in a groove of a dovetailed sheet;
- rotating the clip, such that the flanges interact with slanted walls of the dovetailed sheet;
- securing a tube in the tube retainer.
As an example, a clip may be positioned in a groove of a dovetailed sheet. The flanges of the clip will be substantially parallel to the groove. The clip may then be rotated, such that the flanges interact with slanted walls of the dovetailed sheet. The flanges of the clip will be substantially perpendicular to the groove. In the last step a tube may be secured in the tube retainer.
DK 2017 71038 A1
In practice a user may make an entire pattern of the clips before securing a tube or tubes in the tube retainers of the clips in the pattern.
A kit of a plurality of clips, where each clip may be configured to engage in a groove 5 of a dovetailed sheet, and where each clip has at least one tube retainer configured to engage with one or more tubes.
